So I was using psplinkusb, as you do. A new hardware found bubble and wizard popped up randomly, so I just ignored the bubble and closed the wizard since that had worked for the past few days. I then proceeded to unplug the PSP USB cable and plug it back in so psplinkusb would automatically reconnect, this had also worked for the past few days.

For the first time when I plugged the cable back in my computer froze, so I rebooted it, and now the USB ports don't seem to be working anymore (PSP and USB memory sticks not recognized in them). I was using the ports on the front of my computer's case, the ones on the back still work but I don't want to eventually lose all my USB ports this way. I also notice a device called "Unknown Device" under USB controllers in Device Manager. I have tried updating the driver for this device, uninstalling it (gets picked up as "Unknown Device" on reboot) and I also tried a System Restore, but I still couldn't get the USB ports back.

Any ideas how I can get my USB ports working again? Or how to stop the "new hardware found" thing from appearing randomly? I am using libusb from the svn psplinkusb (psplinkusb\release\pc\windows\driver).

Wow, if you solve the problem for cooleyes mp3 players thread you should know
all your USB ports rely on that one USB controller that isn't working?
No offense at all here, I'd really rather see you keep programming.
Maybe a crappy USB cable has started shorting the power on each socket as you go.

Unless you are poor, this problem isn't worth the $30 AU to get four new USB 2.0 ports on a PCI card, and a new cable for the PSP.
It may be me, but I don't see how a PSP program could be a factor in the issue, but a million things on the PC side could ;)

I didn't think about a new PCI card, in that case I will use the ports round the back of my PC (I have 6 ports, 2 per controller I think) and I might have another USB cable somewhere.

If you have given up on the first USB controller the Add New Hardware popup
can be prevented by disabling the device in the same dialogue window used
to update the driver. Disable the "Unknown Device".

The problem has broken my computer now, I was sleeping when I was woken up by a fan in my computer turning on and off (I had shutdown the computer). I went over to see what was happening and it smelled bad so I pulled the plug out.

I had another look at it this morning and I think at least the PSU is damaged because that's where the smell and crackling noises seem to be coming from and I don't know what else could make the CPU fan come on even when I had turned off the computer. There doesn't seem to be any smoke or visible sparks.

On the USB cables the contact strips are different lengths so power/data connects at different times. But on the smaller connector there is less of a difference in the lengths, I easy to insert it at an angle which could have been what damaged my computer.

I'm on my laptop now, no dev tools on here :(
