I've tried to find out how the apps that swap the X and O buttons and change psp backgrounds work.
Is it so that this two things are so trivial that I should be able to figure it out :) |

If you mean the programm from wab than they just wirte some data in the Flash!
The X&O changer overwrites the whole flash1 with the flash1 from a USA PSP!
The background changer wirte the bmp in flash0:/vsh/resource |

i don't think that the button changer rewrites the whole flash, as it only takes a second or so to finish it's task. |
