Hello,

I've recently broken the screen of my PSP by dropping it, and I'd like to know if I have to change only the LCD screen, or also the backlight.
The thing is, when the LCD screen is connected (i.e. when the large flat cable of the screen is connected to the motherboard), the PSP doesn't even work: when I turn on the power switch, the power LED lights up and then instantaneously lights off again.
If I disconnect the large flat cable of the screen (the smaller flat cable of the backlight still being connected to the motherboard), the PSP seems to work (I heard the startup sound, and I can listen the 'click' sound when I use the arrow buttons), but the backlight still doesn't work (i.e. it is not lit up).

So what does it mean? Is it normal that when the large flat cable is not connected, the backlight doesn't work, or does it mean that the backlight is also broken?

The LCD module has the backlight biult in.
There is a seperate two conductor cable for the backlight.
Either way, you must replace the unit as a whole, so it doesn't matter if the backlight
can work without the rest of the LCD.

I just would like to know if I also have to buy the another backlight or if changing the LCD screen will make the backlight work again.

So my question is: does your backlight work when the large flat cable of the LCD screen is disconnected? Because in my case, it doesn't work, and I don't know if it is normal, or if it means that the backlight is broken too.

About my backlight, it actually didn't work because the fuse on the motherboard had melt down. Soldering the fuse have fixed the backlight.

Art: the backlight and screen are separate in most if not all TFT applications. The backlight is a white semi-transparent light guide with a bunch of LED's behind it, all mounted into a plastic white frame; TFT is essentially a plate of glass which is held onto the white frame with a metal surround; TFT is held into the backlight housing with some doublesided adhesive and a metal retainer. I have never seen replacements sold as a unit, only separate; I have also never seen the metal retainer sold with either part.

Sorry MoOm16, I just replaced the screen and backlight yesterday (which I got separately and had to assemble together with the old metal front from my origional screen) on my PSP and it totally slipped my thoughts to find out the info you need to know while I had it apart. Now that I have all the dust out I dont much want to open it again.

I recommend replacing both at the same time (though there may be other damage to your PSP) since removing the LCD from the origional light guide can damage the guide very easily (leaving blue lit areas on your screen)

I am holding a Sharp LCD right now, and it's not just a metal surround, it's
all housed in a metal enclosure.
Obviously, it can be opened, but I think most people would not like to.
The unit as a whole, has a single part number, but I stand corrected,
they can be sold seperately.
