I made sure I searched the forums before posting this, and i didn't see this anywhere.
Apparently theres an ONLINE petition going on, to ask sony to allow the creation of software by unlicensed home developers.

http://www.petitiononline.com/PSPHB/petition.html

for whoever believes strongly in hombrewing games/apps for PSP please sign this petition. You never know...

Sony might Listen and give us a Developer kit for general Public.

While such a petition no doubt appeals to the heart of an activist, at best I see it ignored, at worst I see it being an annoyance to Sony.

Why ?

1. Not enough people could possibly sign it to make Sony notice.

2. Various elements within Sony are already quite aware of this website and what is happening in the homebrew community.

3. Sony has released kits in the past, such as PS2Linux. This shows that Sony understands and has responded to a consumer desire in the past. I am sure they haven't forgotten.

4. Petitions just plain don't work. One snail-mail letter to Sony will surely rank higher on visibility than 10,000 online signatures. Ok I pulled that number out of some deep place, but the point is, companies apply statistics to these forms of communications in order to determine how many similar-minded people are represented by a single letter.

5. But hey, more power to y'all. Voice your opinion. But if you really want to be heard, do more than just sign the opinion. Write that letter, and be polite about (and avoid common mistakes such as arrogantly stated demands, not saying there are any here...)

would be nice if sony release an offical devkit and SDK legally to us... an official sdk would be more powerful to us, than what were using now. being actually able to code 3d games with acceleration, accessing usb devie and maybe being able to write drivers for usb devices... etc,etc..

although your right, it doesn't stop us now.

It seems to me that if sony had any form of officially supported homebrew that it would be easier for them to prevent piracy, as the honest people who don't support piracy (many people on this forum do not) would no longer be trying to circumvent their security measures. There is already rumors about being able to run bootleg games off the memory stick, if there was an official sdk that was restricted perhaps the "kxploit" would never have been released, and therefore noone with a 1.50 psp could bootleg games.

But then theres the other side of the argument where people could use such an official sdk and modify it to make piracy even easier than ever....

When you silence the dissent, you've got yourself a (non credible) majority.

Hence the reason they restrict it in so many avenues, cost and contract being two of them.

I am not sure where a majority even fits in here. Business is not a democracy - but certainly it operates within the constraints of the laws of a land that may be ruled by a Democracy. A website (commercial or non-commercial) is not a democracy except where explicitly or implicitly allowed. That is because we are talking in the areas of property and property rights.

Furthermore, one's property rights ought not be decided by any democracy other than, again, the laws of the land where that property resides. And if that democracy turns to fasco-socialism (Hitler/Lenin-Stalin) in which the government feels it owns the property in the name of the people, I am moving.

I would love to see a sort of limited SDK from Sony... but it is entirely up to them, and it will likely be 2 years down the road when Sony is well entrenched in the market if they do it.

I look at it this way: If Sony retains the right to sign the code, then they can still shut out the loaders and other garbage with their DRM, yet have an avenue for people to produce software. Unfortunately, it doesn't help with the testing aspect... which is not good either.

Something like a PSPShell would also be useful, a restricted environment in which to play which loads up your ELF. Providing a set of libs which are designed to limit access to a reasonable extent (no flash or UMD access at all), to prevent piracy and protect their bottom line.

It wouldn't eliminate the piracy element 100%, but it would help disassociate hombrew and piracy in the minds of the gamer masses. Not to mention people would not have to fight through the DRM initially to develop.

omg the solution is sooooooo easy (to explain) lol but all these hackers have to do is duplicate the 1.5 firmware but re-code it so the PSP reads it a the 1.52 or whatever version is out so its actually the 1.5 (or 1.0) firmware so homebrew stuff runs and stuff, but new games will think its 1.52 (cause the firmware shouldnt effect the gameplay) so, in other words.... a custom firmware! if i knew something about coding i would try this, but im jus gonna leave that alone lol.... but yeah.... do any of ya'll think this could work?

I usually just lurk around watching the progress around here, but I have to say that last post (dasurfrdude27) was completely idiotic, you have no idea how to code but you know how to downgrade a psp's firmware? that makes no sense, thats a very ridiculos post, you have no idea what that moronic statement really intales

OMG! you have no freakin idea what your talking about!
