Ok, maybe this is a little bit off topic, but in case people want to try out
the new "Media Server" functionality in the new system software upgrade, I can
tell you that it works fine with the following software off of sourceforge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ushare/
which uses
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pupnp/
Took a little tweaking to get running under Solaris, but nothing major.

I can't get it to work with my NAS (Synology 101j) and the default UPnP server....
Is there anybody tried with twonkymedia server ?

Music and Pictures work fine with Twonky. Videos are ok too, except for the limited number of codecs supported.
I have heard that Nero Home(?) will transcode in realtime and supports just about any codec Windows does. people seem to have this up-and-running streaming to ps3.
I thought it might be an idea to look at the Transcode360 project
http://www.runtime360.com/projects/. It does the same job as Nero as far as i can see and is free. I will take a look over the weekend.

Afaik it should work with VLC server as well if you compile VLC with --enable-upnp
EDIT: It seems currently VLC only offers support for an optional upnp client.
MythTV on Linux works quite nice (http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page) |

no, it doesn't:(
but for Windows you can try tversity: http://tversity.com/home.
I'd be more than happy if mythtv could transcode on the fly or even better if Sony adds some of the important codecs to the PS3.
Update:
Ups, I was a little bit to fast:

I've been trying TVersity. It seems a bit flaky. I can play one video, then the next one won't play (unsupported data type), then the server seems to go down, which locks up the XMB. My mp3s can only be played from the Flash browser interface and not from XMB.
Could be that I'm on Vista and most of my movies must be transcoded from divx which doesn't run properly itself (keeps crashing explorer when it uses the codec to generate thumbnails), or it could be something else specific to me.

regarding MythTv I've found the following statement:
UPnP-clients server/hardware that are not (yet) compatible with MythTV:

Sony PS3 - Firmware 1.80 added the ability to stream music, pictures and video from DLNA-compatible devices. At this point, it does not detect MythTV (v 0.20) as a streaming server. Apparently some SVN builds are detected and display files but other than MPEG2 (from PVR150 at least) files, no music or video will play.
